About Paine College

Founded in 1882 in Augusta, Georgia, Paine College stands as a historically Black liberal arts institution rooted in faith, scholarship, and service. Affiliated with both the United Methodist Church and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, Paine has cultivated generations of leaders through its academic programs in business, education, and the liberal arts. With a student body of approximately 310 and a campus nestled in Augusta’s historic district, the college continues to serve as a vital educational and cultural anchor in the region.

Paine’s enduring legacy is reflected in its distinguished alumni, including trailblazers such as John Wesley Gilbert, the first Black archaeologist; civil rights leader Dr. Channing Tobias; best-selling author Frank Yerby; religious leaders Bishop Woodie White and Bishop Marshall Gilmore; renowned educator Dr. Shirley McBay; and former DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond. Their achievements underscore Paine’s role as a nurturing ground for individuals committed to making a positive impact in society.

The college’s revitalization efforts—bolstered by the unwavering support of alumni, community members, and strategic partners—have positioned Paine for a vibrant future. Its accreditation through TRACS affirms its academic integrity and institutional resilience. Paine has also long been a hub for cultural expression, hosting world-class performers like Jessye Norman, showcasing its renowned Concert Choir, and welcoming the soulful sounds of the Augusta Chorale of Georgia. Continuing this tradition, the college now celebrates the extraordinary talents of Augusta native Russell Joel Brown. As Paine looks ahead, community-driven fundraising events and visionary partnerships remain essential to sustaining its mission and expanding its reach.
